01The short version

Three rules, one cold wallet, zero Discord links. Plus the risk warning your favourite influencer skipped.

Below is the long version: what we tried, what it cost, what the boring spreadsheet actually said at month six. No screenshots, no fake yacht. Just the receipts.

02Why How to Be in Crypto Without Getting Rugged is having a moment

The traditional path — degree, graduate scheme, twenty-five-year mortgage — was designed for a labour market that quietly stopped existing somewhere around 2019. Wages flat, rent doubled, the office is now a Zoom rectangle. The people we know who are quietly doing fine got there by a side door.

How to Be in Crypto Without Getting Rugged is one of those side doors. It isn't glamorous. It isn't a get-rich scheme. It is, however, repeatable — which is the only quality that actually matters when you're trying to build an income outside the system.

"Repeatable beats spectacular every single time. The internet is full of one-hit wonders telling you they've cracked it."

03What we actually did

We ran this for ninety days as a controlled experiment. One operator, one laptop, one spreadsheet. We tracked hours-in, money-out, money-in, and the ratio of "this felt good" to "this made me want to lie down."

Three things mattered more than any tactic: a) showing up on the days you don't feel like it, b) keeping fixed costs absurdly low until the income proves itself, c) ignoring everyone on Twitter telling you to add another funnel.

  • 01Cut every fixed cost to its smallest viable version.
  • 02Build one income mechanism, all the way through, before adding a second.
  • 03Track the numbers weekly in a spreadsheet you actually open.
  • 04Refuse to buy any course over £100 for the first six months.
  • 05Read three primary sources for every one influencer hot take.

04The numbers, honestly

Month one: roughly nothing. A few quid from referrals, mostly spent on a domain. Month two: enough to notice. Month three: a real, small, recurring number — the kind you can plan around.

The interesting bit is what happens after month four, when most people quit. The curve isn't linear and it isn't a hockey stick — it's a series of step-changes that arrive when you finally remove the thing that's been silently throttling you.

05Where most people get it wrong

Trying five things badly instead of one thing properly. Buying a £997 course before earning a single pound. Optimising the logo at the expense of the offer. Reading about the topic instead of doing the topic.

Above all: confusing motion with progress. Posting on LinkedIn about your "journey" isn't a journey.

06What to do this week

Pick the smallest possible version of this. Run it for seven days. Write down what happened in a single paragraph. Decide whether to continue or kill it based on evidence, not vibes.

If you continue, run it for another ninety. If you kill it, kill it cleanly and pick a different door. That's the whole game.

"The freedom you're trying to buy is on the other side of doing one unsexy thing for longer than feels reasonable."
